WINE

This week-end's tasting shows off some great red and white blends (and a Zinfandel) from the West Coast.

2008 "High on the Hog" White Blend Barrel 27 Wine Co.
Paso Robles, California
A blend of 39% Grenache Blanc, 36% Viognier, 20% Roussanne, 5% Marsanne with all the fruit coming from the Paso Robles appellation. Offers loads of waxy, lychee nut, apricot, and tropical fruit (especially pineapples) characteristics interwoven with a hint of honeysuckle, a fleshy, succulent mouth feel, and very good purity as well as length. This is an impressively-endowed white with admirable focus.88pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $18.99 Special: $17.09 Case: $16.14

2007 Zinfandel, Pump House Winery
Lodi, California
A high-toned, deep ruby/purple-colored wine with a peppery, black-cherry-scented nose, ripe, medium-bodied, concentrated flavors, good acidity, plenty of length, and a layered, concentrated personality - rare for this vintage. There is a deep mid-palate, as well as plenty of sweet fruit in the finish.90pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $13.99 Special: $12.59 Case: $11.89

2007 "Big Red" Blend The Pines 1852 Vineyard
Columbia Valley, Oregon
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Zinfandel. This wine brings together the best of four wines for a hearty blend with a full mouth-feel. Long legs, jammy berries, and a peppery finish make this wine great with steak and pasta.
Bottle: $19.99 Special: $17.99 Case: $16.99

2007 "Quantum Reserve" Red Blend, Relativity Vineyards
Napa Valley, California
Composed of a dizzying blend of Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, Syrah, Charbono, Grenache, and Cabernet, the juice for which was selected from excess wines provided by a highly regarded, well-known vineyard. Trust us when we say you won't be held PRISONER by the price. A big, sexy, fruit bomb boasting abundant amounts of black, blue, and red fruits along with pepper, spice box, earth, and herbs. Soft tannins, medium to full body, and a heady mouth feel make this a seductive wine to enjoy over the next 2-3 years.
Bottle: $22.99 Special: $20.69 Case: $19.54
