WINE
The Argentinian wines we featured last week were received so positively that we decided to continue with a variation on that theme and show off some more great wines from the Southern Hemisphere. This weeks selections show off some great single varietal wines and wonderfully balanced blends from Chile, Argentina, and Australia and are simple not to be missed.
2009 Pedro Ximénez, Viña Falernia
Elqui Valley, Chile
Made from Pedro Ximenez, which is traditionally known as a sherry grape. Medium straw-colored, it offers up an expressive perfume of peach, apricot, and delicate floral aromas. Viscous (and dry) on the palate with terrific grip and concentration.
Bottle: $10.99 Special: $9.89 Case: $9.34
2006 Syrah Reserva, Viña Falernia
Elqui Valley, Chile
Medium bodied and elegant on the palate with an enticing nose of smoke, game, and blueberry. Shows layers of spicy fruit, good ripeness, and excellent length, this crowd-pleaser will evolve for 1-2 years but can be enjoyed now as it is an outstanding value.90pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $13.99 Special: $12.59 Case: $11.89
2006 Shira/Cabernet, The Garden Path
Langhorne Creek, South Australia, Australia
A blend of Shiraz (52%)-Cabernet Sauvignon (48%). A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up an attractive nose of cigar box, damp earth, violets, black currant, and blueberry. Ripe, sweetly-fruited, and nicely balanced, this flavorful effort over-delivers in a big way.90pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $15.99 Special: $14.39 Case: $13.59
2008 Cocina Blend, La Posta
Mendoza, Argentina
Composed of 60% Malbec, 20% Bonarda, and 20% Syrah. Purple-colored, it has an enticing bouquet of cinnamon, Dentyne gum, cigar box, violets, black cherry, and blueberry. Medium-bodied, round and sweetly-fruited on the palate, it has plenty of savory spice notes, enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years, and a lengthy, pure finish.90pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $15.99 Special: $14.39 Case: $13.59
BEER
Brauerei Aying has a long-standing reputation for excellence in beer and hospitality. Although Ayinger Brewery was founded in the picturesque village of Aying, 25 kilometers from Munich in 1878, the site of the Ayinger Gasthaus Brewery Hotel has been one of Bavaria's most famous restaurants for more than 500 years.
Ayinger beers are characterized by their delicious balanced maltiness (not found in beers of the major Munich breweries). Unlike the mass-market brewers, Ayinger uses a significant portion of locally-grown barley and wheat to produce their beers.
Jahrhundert-bier (Century Celebration Lager)
Golden, big herbaceous bouquet with a soft, medium body and a long lingering finish with dry hop tones.5.5% Alc./Vol.
Regular: $8.99 4pk Special: $8.09 4pk.
Ur-Weisse
Old-fashioned Bavarian dunkel (dark) wheat beer. Amber in color, dry in palate, very fruity, bursting with flavor. A complex beer with suggestions of soft fruit, apple, and, in the finish, perhaps even cloves. Extraordinary as an aperitif.5.8% Alc./Vol.
Regular: $3.99 16.9oz Special: $3.59 16.9oz.
Oktober Fest-Märzen
Full-bodied, flavorful March (Märzen) beer brewed and lagered to celebrate Bavaria's famous Oktoberfest. Served at German beer festivals in September and October with roasted chicken, pork, and sauerkraut. 5.8% Alc./Vol.
Regular: $3.99 16.9oz Special: $3.59 16.9oz.
Celebrator Doppelbock
Originally brewed at a monastery in northern Italy, "double bock" was quickly introduced by Bavarian brewers to compete with bock beers. Doppelbock names end with the suffix "-ator." Profoundly dark, rich elixir with a complex fruitiness of roasted malt and whole hop flowers. Semi-dry finish. 6.7% Alc./Vol.
Regular: $13.99 4pk Special: $12.59 4pk.
