WINE

We're in the home stretch now - the last hurray of summer fun, cook outs, and going to the beach. In a scant three weeks the kids are back to school so this is the time to make EVERY DAY count.

This week's wines are chosen with the grill in mind. Each one works well with the summer fave's - whether it's crab cakes, grilled Rockfish, steaks or lamb chops.

2008 Pinot Blanc "Freedom Hill Vineyard," St Innocent Winery
Willamette Valley, Oregon
The 2008 Pinot Blanc Freedom Hill Vineyard was fermented and aged in 300-liter barrels. Light gold-colored, it offers up aromas of mineral, poached pear, and green apple. Flavorful and well-balanced, this lengthy effort will drink well for another 3 years.90pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $19.99 Special: $17.99 Case: $16.99

2008 Riesling, Dom. Zind-Humbrecht
Alsace, France
"A well-cut Riesling, with a salty mineral note and laser-like acidity defining the quince, yellow peach and floral notes. It packs a lot of flavor into an elegant and lightweight package. Drink now through 2022."92pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $25.99 Special: $23.39 Case: $22.09

2008 Nero d'Avola/Syrah "Benuara," Cusumano
Sicily, Italy
A 70% Nero d'Avola and 30% Syrah blend from Sicily, it presents a rich dark profile with a very drinkable medium body. Pretty notes of licorice and tar develop in the glass. There are bright clean flavours, well delineated fruit, and great focus in a much more modern style.88pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $17.99 Special: $16.19 Case: $15.29

2008 Monastrell "Juan Gil," Bodegas Hijos de Juan Gil
Jumilla, Spain
A perennial favourite in wine publications like Wine Advocate (where it has NEVER scored less then 90pts) Juan Gil may just represent one of THE BEST values in red wine available. Shows a deep purple-colour with an enticing bouquet of underbrush, cedar, plum, and blueberry; on the palate it is dense, sweetly-fruited, and concentrated.
Bottle: $18.99 Special: $17.09 Case: $16.14

BEER

Brews around the World

Hoss Rye Lager
Great Divide Brewing (Denver, CO)
Hoss is based on the Marzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with hints of cherry and dark fruits, dominate, while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer. 6.2% Alc./Vol.
Regular: $12.99 6pk Special: $11.69 6pk.

Rejewvenator - Harvest to Harvest Ale
Schmaltz Brewing (Saratoga Springs, NY)
The experimental process of brewing Rejewvenator begins with 5 specialty malts and 5 hop varieties blending European tradition with brazenly innovative American craft beer flavor and attitude. The brewers use Lager yeast to start cold, bottom fermentation then let the beer warm and pitch a hybrid Abbey/Trappist Belgian Ale yeast brought in exclusively for this brew. Finally organic concord grape Juice gets infused into the fermenter. Rejewvenator then sits and ages for another month before centerfuge filtration and packaging. 8.2% Alc./Vol.
Regular: $5.99 22oz Special: $5.39 22oz.

Quadrupel Trappist Ale
La Trappe - Abidj Koningshoeven (Tilburg, the Netherlands)
Quadrupel sits at the top of the Koningshoeven range. At 10% alcohol by volume, it's a big deep amber beer with a rich, warming flavor. Full-bodied and mild, slightly sweet and just a hint of bitterness round out the palate. In the nose you will detect fruit, a faint, pleasant yeastiness and just a touch of resiny hops. Although Quadrupel is delicious when consumed fresh, it can benefit from years of aging in a cool, dark place. The flavor of aged Quadrupel is reminiscent of port. 10% Alc./Vol.
Regular: $20.99/5.99 4pk/single Special: $18.89/5.39 4pk/single.
