WINE
This week's tasting selections are a veritable tour de force of great summer drinking. Three reds, a white, and a rose from three different countries and all are sure to please.
We still have a few weeks until the hazy, lazy, crazy days of summer come to a close so now is NO TIME to be messing about with a bad wine. These wines are great on their own or with nearly any food you can throw at them so stop by this weekend and make your remaining summer days count!
2008 Pouilly Fumé, Domaine de Berthiers
Loire Valley, France
You'll find this medium-bodied, dry Pouilly- Fumé has a classically styled, terroir-dominated personality with a steely, flinty character. Impressively-extracted it exhibits copious amounts of flowery, smoky, honeyed, melon fruit flavours with a zippy well balanced finish.
Bottle: $21.99 Special: $19.79 Case: $18.69
2009 Sangiovese Rosato, Benessere Vineyards
Napa Valley, CA
A bone dry rosé made from 100% Sangiovese. Flows onto the palate with an expressive core of perfumed cherries, spices and flowers, this is an especially elegant, generous rosé loaded with personality.
Bottle: $15.99 Special: $14.39 Case: $13.59
2007 Rosso di Montepulciano, Az Agr Dei
Rossi di Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy
"Dei's 2007 Rosso di Montepulciano is a fresh, floral red with a generous core of fruit and lovely overall balance. This generous Rosso is best enjoyed over the next year or two while the fruit remains plump."88pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $19.99 Special: $17.99 Case: $16.99
2006 Cotes du Roussillon Villages, Hecht & Bannier
Cotes du Roussillon, France
"The Hecht & Bannier 2006 Cotes du Roussillon Villages smells of cedar, coconut (from a significant proportion of new wood), cherry, marjoram, and smoke. Stimulating hints of cherry pit bitterness along with smoke, herbal pungency, and graphite and crushed stone add to the dynamic impression conveyed by unusually fresh fruit, leading to a long, lip-smacking finish." 91pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $24.99 Special: $22.49 Case: $21.24
2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Michael Pozzan Winery
Knights Valley, Sonoma, CA
Full-bodied and loaded with concentration, this big, supple wine is an unheard of value in Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Round and gentle with silky tannins, this is a plush red to drink every day.
Bottle: $15.99 Special: $14.39 Case: $13.59
BEER
New Brews - California Style IPA-athon
Brew Free or Die IPA
21st Amendment Brewing (San Francisco, California)
BREW FREE! OR DIE IPA is brewed with some serious west coast attitude. This aromatic golden IPA starts with a sucker punch of six different hops to the nose, quickly balanced by a solid malt backbone. 21st Amendments top selling beer at the pub, this IPA starts big and finishes clean leaving you wanting more. 7.0% Alc./Vol.
Regular $10.99 6pk Special $9.89 6pk.
Back in Black (Black IPA)
21st Amendment Brewing (San Francisco, California)
Inspired by Paul Revere's midnight ride, 21st Amendment rebelled against the British style IPA, embraced the more aggressive American version and then recast it in bold, brave, defiant black. The Black IPA is a Declaration of Independence from the tyranny of the expected. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish. 6.8% Alc./Vol.
Regular $10.99 6pk Special $9.89 6pk.
14th Anniversary "Empirial IPA"
Stone Brewing (Escondido, California)
"Stone has taken a look to the IPA's of the British Empire of days gone by for their inspiration here, calling for highly intemperate quantities of Target, East Kent Goldings, and Boadicea hops, which bestowed upon this dry-bodied ale a powerfully spicy, earthy aroma. On the palate, peppery hops assert themselves early and often, with malt sweetness making a brief appearance before being beaten back by a long, complex, and decisively bitter finish. What better way to contemplate the fate of empires past, present, and future?"8.9% Alc./Vol.
Regular $7.49 22oz Special $6.74 22oz.
