Weekly Wine Tastings July 25-26, 2008
Please join us at the i.m.Wine tasting bar every Friday and Saturday from 1-7pm; this week we are tasting:
Evolution #9, Sokol Blosser Winery (Dundee Hills, OR)
The 9 grapes tie together perfectly, creating a smooth, layered white wine that can hold its own or stand up to just about any food pairing you dare to serve it with. Russ Rosner, Sokol Blosser's winemaker, says, "In over twenty years of winemaking this is by far the hardest wine I've had to make. It's like mixing 9 different colors of paint and trying to end up with a rainbow instead of a muddy brown." Regarding the question of whether this blend was created on purpose or if they just blended their leftovers and it happened to work, we’ll let the success of Evolution speak for itself.
Retail: $20.99 Special: $18.89 Case Price: $17.84
2005 Pouilly-Fume, Pascal Joliet (Loire Valley, FR)
The house of Pascal Jolivet is one of the youngest and most dynamic in the Loire Valley. Founded in 1985, this specialist in the wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume has very quickly gained a leading position with the Michelin-starred restaurants of France. Pale straw in color. Piquant, minerally, austere, and very clean nose. The palate is open, fresh, and direct, with ripe fruit flavor. Clean biting finish; very youthful; minerally flavors resurface.
Retail: $22.99 Special: $20.69 Case Price: $19.54
2007 Rose de Loire, Chateau Soucherie (Loire Valley, FR)
This beautiful property in the heart of the Coteaux du Layon has a fine touch with the Cabernet Franc grape. Their Rose de Loire is dry with a marked minerality to its flavor and finish. In this rosé their experience with cabernet is evident. Strawberry and herb aromas rise up from the glass. Enjoy with picnic foods, steaks, burgers, spare ribs, parmigiano, romano or cheddar cheese.
Retail: $15.99 Special: $14.39 Case Price: $13.59
Meditrina Red, Sokol Blosser Winery (Dundee Hills, OR)
Named after the Roman Goddess of wine (no word if her and Bacchus had a thing going). With Pinot Noir as the base of the blend with Syrah and Zinfandel to give the blend a luscious, juicy, easy-drinking mouthful of red wine that's both bright and vibrant yet round and soft.
Retail: $20.99 Special: $18.89 Case Price: $17.84
2006 Jeff Runquist Petite Sirah (Sonoma County, CA)
The color of the 2006 Petite Sirah is intensely purple like a well ripened plum with aromas of dense jamy blackberry and blueberry are complimented by a smoky, spicy oak bouquet with hints of tar, chocolate and mocha. One might expect a wine with this color and density to be astringent and tannic, but the flavors are of bright zesty sweet red fruits. The wine's body is rich and full of well-rounded and softened oak tannins. The finish is surprisingly succulent and lingers minutes after swallowing the wine. The balance of tannins, acid, and alcohol combined with this wine's intense flavors promises significant rewards for those who are patient enough to provide it with some time in the cellar.
Retail: $34.99 Special: $31.49 Case Price: $29.74
