WINE

Everyone knows that the economy in California isn't that great right now, to put it nicely.  So we here at i.m.Wine decided to put the traditional "East Coast v. West Coast" snarkiness aside and lend a hand in our own special way.  All of this week's wines are from small, family owned wineries that produce great wines at great prices.

No thanks necessary Gov. Schwarzenegger, we're just doing our part!

BEER

Altbier

Southampton Publick House (Southampton, New York)

Altbiers are traditional German copper-brown ales. Prior to the isolation of lager yeasts in the mid 1800s, all beers in Germany were brewed using ale yeasts. The term "Alt," which literally means "old" or "antique," is a reference to types of brews made before lagers revolutionized the brewing world. Ale yeasts typically ferment at higher temperatures than lager yeasts and result in products that tend to have a little more fruitiness in flavor and aroma. Southampton Altbier is made with ale yeast but fermented at cooler temperatures similar to lager beer. This results in an ale with less pronounced fruitiness than most ales. Additionally, Altbiers are aged cold for a longer period of time, again similar to lagers. This more expensive and time consuming process tends to dry out the beer and give it a cleaner, lager-like finish. With this "best of both worlds" approach, Southampton produces an Altbier that has some of the most favorable characteristics of both ales and lagers.

$9.99  6pk.

IPA

Caldera Brewing (Ashland, Oregon)

An American-style India Pale Ale brewed with plenty of body and an assertive hop profile. Caldera Brewing Company is the first craft brewery in the State of Oregon to brew and can its own beer! Cans are accepted in locations where bottles have long been banned, i.e., golf courses, concert venues, beaches, and other places that do not usually mix with glass. This beer, in it's lightweight aluminum can, is perfect for backpacking, fishing, hiking, camping, rafting, or just to stack in your refrigerator at home.

$13.99  6pk cans.

Tiny

Weyerbacher Brewing (Easton, Pennsylvania)

This velvety concoction excites your senses with bottomless roasted, earthy and vinous notes. Tiny is a Belgian-inspired Imperial Stout weighing in at 12%. This smooth sipper is made with 5 malts and a touch of oats. You'll find big chocolate and roasted notes, balanced with the Belgian flavors from the Abbey yeast strain.  This beer is very smooth and lacks the astringency you sometimes find in these huge Imperial Stouts. This one should age nicely for years to come.

$7.99  750ml.
