WINE

Recently we've had the good fortune to sample a lot of really great Italian wines from all over the country, so we decided to divide them up into 2 tastings. While last week we focused primarily on the north, this week we look into the wines from Umbria and Sicily. They're not household names like their Piedmont or Tuscan cousins, but the wines of Italy's southern wine districts are bold, full-bodied, and satisfying.

2008 Bianco Cube, Novelli
Umbria, Italy
This is a lively, compelling, unique wine from the indigenous varieties of Trebbiano Spoletino, Grechetto, and Pecorino. Wonderfully ripe and rich with an attractive fatness yet still remains refreshing to the palate and finishes with soft tangy notes.
Bottle: $14.99  Special: $13.49  Case: $12.74

2007 Rosso Cube, Novelli
Umbria, Italy
This stylish cuvee is produced to show the richness and finesse of the indigenous varietals Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo. It is a beautifully balanced wine, with plenty of dark red fruit, herbs, tobacco, spices and earthiness.
Bottle: $15.99  Special: $14.39  Case: $13.59

2007 Syrah "Le Contrade" IGT, Casalbianco
Belice Valley, Sicily, Italy
Showing outstanding length on the palate with peppery, jammy notes to accompany its blackberry aromas and flavors; its silky texture, balance, and finesse are not unlike those of a Cote Rotie.
Bottle: $17.99  Special: $16.19  Case: $15.29

2006 Montefalco Rosso, Novellia
Umbria, Italy
A blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. A gorgeous wine with notes of floral red fruits, sweet spices, menthol, licorice and new leather are some of the nuances that linger on the long finish.
Bottle: $23.99  Special: $21.59  Case: $20.39

BEER

Red & White
Dogfish Head Brewing (Lewes, DE)
A big, belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation, a fraction of the batch is aged in a giant oak tank. Successfully marrying the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine, this has been one of the most popular Dogfish Head brews of the past several years.
$13.99 750ml

Wilco Tango Foxtrot
Lagunitas Brewing (Petaluma, CA)
A big Ol' Imperial Brown Ale to help you slide right into springtime. Rich, smooth, dangerous & chocolaty. Caramel, peat, and resiny hops are the main elements, and the body is rich but not heavy. The finish lingers pleasantly, with hints of hop resin and molasses. Another excellent Lagunitas effort!
$5.49 22oz.

Obovoid
Boulder Brewing (Bouder, CO)
Obovoid combines the richness of an oatmeal stout with the subtle complexity of oak-aging to impart a subtle vanilla character which rounds out the beer's natural intense roastiness and huge hoppy nature. Lots and lots of rich coffee notes and a bittersweet chocolate finish derived from the black and chocolate malts, it's as dark in color as deep space.
$7.99 22oz.
