WINE
Although we are closed today (Thursday), we plan to open at 10:30 am Friday. So, come out, come out whereever you are!! With the general "All clear" given, it's time to shovel out and restock because this week we're showcasing 4 small production gems from California. These wines would best be described as "Wine-makers wines" in that they are generally well known by people in the business of wine (producers, restaurateurs, etc) but, the makers of these wines don't necessarily seek out the wine press.
2008 Sauvignon Blanc "Five Clones", Worthy
Napa Valley, California
A hybrid blend of New Zealand combined with a Loire Valley style of Sauvignon. Crisp, fresh lemon grass notes intermixed with melon, fig, and spice builds incrementally in the mouth. 90pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $24.99 Special: $22.49 Case: $21.24
2007 Pinot Noir Truchard Vineyard, X Winery
Carneros/Napa Valley, California
A heck of a wine for the price, there is not a hard edge to be found in this soft, round, seductive, medium-bodied Pinot Noir. 89pts Wine Advocate
Bottle: $22.99 Special: $20.69 Case: $19.54
2008 Gunfighter Red "Third Notch", Dark Horse Winery
Dry Creek Valley/Sonoma, California
A delicious blend of Zinfandel (50%), Syrah (30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). A rich, smoky backbone with intense aromas of blueberry and red fruit flavors. Shows wonderful dimension of deep fruit and soft tannins with a long balanced finish.
Bottle: $19.99 Special: $17.99 Case: $16.99
2007 Cab Sauv "Peacemaker", Dark Horse Winery
Diamond Mountain/Napa Valley, California
Copious aromas of loamy soil, black currants, licorice, unsmoked tobacco, and cedar. With a dazzling texture, full-bodied power, sweet but noticeable tannins, and a youthful, promising style.
Bottle: $25.99 Special: $23.39 Case: $22.09
BEER
Plenty of great beer to be had this weekend to chase away the blahs brought on by the big snow. We have two great offering from locals - Frederick's own Flying Dog Brewing Co.'s "Raging Bitch" Belgian Style IPA and the new bottling of Du Claw Brewery's "Colossus" Ale, which lives up to it's name coming in at a whopping 22% ABV. We top things off with another Brewdog offering, "Paradox" Imperial Stout aged in 25 year old Macallan Single Malt Scotch barrels.
There's much to see this weekend on the beer side, so hitch up the dog sled. We'll see you when you get here!
"Raging Bitch" Belgian Style IPA
Flying Dog Brewing Co. (Frederick, MD)
An American IPA with the smack of Warrior, Columbus, Amarillo hops but augmented with Belgian yeast to give it a trademark Belgian-style taste. At 8.3% ABV, this dangerously drinkable beer isn't to be messed with.
$9.99 6pk
Colossus American Style Strong Ale
DuClawBrewing Co. (Abingdon, MD)
The name says it all! This unique brew comes in officially at 21.92% ABV. This was accomplished by the use of 3 different strains of yeast and a lot of TLC. Technically an ale, this monster has complex flavors and aromas that suggest characteristics of mead and fruit wines.
$19.99 22oz.
"Paradox" Single Malt Barrel Aged Imperial Stout
Brew Dog Brewery (Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland)
Clocks in at 10% ABV with 5 different malts, two different hops. This intense, deeply structured imperial stout is aged for 6 months in 1987 Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whiskey casks that once held sherry as well. Describing it as complex would be a bit of an understatement.
$12.99 12oz.
