The Wines of Marquis Philips

2008 Holly's Blend White, Marquis Philips
Langhorne Creek, South Australia, Australia
Bottle: $12.99    Special: $11.69    Case: $11.43
A blend of 90% Verdelho and 10% Chardonnay, 30% of which was fermented in French oak, the balance in tank. Medium straw-colored, it exhibits a fragrant bouquet of citrus, melon, lemon-lime, and a hint of tropical fruits in the background. Supple-textured and easy going, the wine has plenty of ripe flavors balanced by crisp acidity.

2008 Grenache, Marquis Philips
McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australia
Bottle: $15.99    Special: $14.39    Case: $13.59
“The 2008 Grenache was sourced from 30-60 year old, low yielding vines. It was aged for 12 months in predominantly seasoned French and American oak. Medium ruby-colored, it displays an enticing perfume of cedar, earth notes, and cherry. Smooth and seamless on the palate, this is a concentrated, ripe, flavorful, totally pleasurable wine that lacks only complexity.”  89Pts Wine Advocate

2008 Sarah's Blend Red, Marquis Philips
Southeast Australia, Australia
Bottle: $16.99    Special: $15.29    Case: $14.44
“The purple/black 2008 Sarah’s Blend is composed of 63% Shiraz, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Notes of smoke, espresso, damp earth, spice box, and assorted black fruits lead to a full-bodied, already complex, rich wine with loads of ripe fruit. The finish is long, smooth, and filled with flavor.” 91Pts Wine Advocate

2008 Shiraz, Marquis Philips
Southeast Australia, Australia
Bottle: $16.99    Special: $15.29    Case: $14.44

“The 2008 Shiraz offers up aromas of cigar box, damp earth, smoked meat, bacon, and blueberry. Packed with flavor on the palate, it is full-bodied, round, and altogether pleasure-bent. This knock-out offering is New World-ish, with exceptionally ripe, concentrated, chewy fruit, a touch of oak (mostly new American), and abundant hedonism, texture, and flesh. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.” 91Pts Wine Advocate

Marquis Philips wines débuted in 2000 as a partnership between highly talented winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis and American importer, Dan Philips of “The Grateful Palate”.   The wines were received with much fan fair in the wine world and the label became an instant hit for producing big, dense, hedonistically styled wines at great prices.   There was a shake up at the winery when in 2005 Sparky and Sarah left the endeavor to start their own label, the wildly popular “Mollydooker” Wines.  The departure of the husband and wife winemaking team caused a lot of questions to be asked about whether or not the quality of the wines would slip.  However, fans of these wines should take heart.  With veteran vigneron Chris Ringland now in charge of the winemaking, the label is still producing jaw droppingly intense wines at great prices.

“I can state unequivocally that this is the finest collection of Marquis Philips wines since the label was started in 2000. Ringland is concerned about flavor and balance which is what these wines are all about. Those seeking low alcohol, subtlety, and finesse should of course look elsewhere.”
