 EXCEPTIONAL WINES

Ch. Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin

The Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin, available in very limited quantities, is produced mostly from very old Mourvedre vines yielding tiny quantities of intensely ripe, concentrated fruit. Those fortunate enough to have tasted this never forget it. Truly a "grand vin."

"...there is almost a surreal elegance and lightness for a wine this powerful and dense. Almost difficult to describe, the gorgeous multi-layered texture, and the heavenly perfume of smoked meats, flowers, blueberries, blackberries, creosote, and truffles is a knock-out. There’s nothing out of place in this remarkable wine, and it seems somewhat approachable already, yet it will no doubt have the uncanny ability to age for 25-40+ years.” $419.99  Vintage 2004 750ml;  96-98 pts Robert Parker

“...Black purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of smoke, camphor, blackberry, cassis, sweet cherry, white flowers, licorice, and Chinese black tea, the wine has superb richness, huge tannins, massive concentration...”

$999.99 Vintage 2003 1.5L;  95 pts, Robert Parker

2006 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf du Pape Proprietary BlendDomaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf du Pape 2006

Proprietor Jean-Paul Dauman has made Domaine de la Vieille Julienne a brilliant reference point for Chateauneuf-du-Pape. These are traditionally extraordinarily concentrated Chateauneuf du Papes created from old vine, biodynamically farmed sites; truly natural wines aged in neutral tanks or old wood.

“... a dense purple color as well as an expressive bouquet of black currants, licorice, kirsch, meat juices, and hints of spice box as well as lavender. Full-bodied, opulent, rich, and stunningly concentrated, it is one of the vintage’s finest efforts… This beauty should provide plenty of pleasure over the next 15+ years.” –Robert Parker

“Very rich and densely packed, with a huge core of raspberry ganache, macerated plum and hoisin sauce notes wrapped by dark licorice, Turkish coffee and charred applewood. The long finish ripples with tannins, but this is velvety and well-integrated.” –Wine Spectator

$69.99 Vintage 2006;  94 pts, Robert Parker,  95 points, Wine Spectator

Clos des Truffiers Coteaux du Languedoc 2000

From a tiny parcel of nearly forty year old Syrah vines outside Saint Pargoire, the Clos des Truffiers benefits not just from what has proven to be an exceptional micro-climate, but from exceptionally low yields subjected to extraordinarily rigorous sorting. Long maceration and 26 month aging in new barrels promote the display of sheer density that typifies this wine, yet its most striking feature is what can only be called a palate staining mineral streak to go along with its equally intense fruit. This wine’s occasional resemblance to great Bordeaux is not so surprising, if one considers the inspiration of Davies, long-time Bordeaux resident and negociant, and prime mover in Right Bank wine circles.

$99.99 Vintage 2000;  90 pts, Stephen Tanzer

Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fumé Silex 2005

This wine is possibly the most unique example of Sauvignon Blanc in the world.  Grown entirely on quartz based soils (called silex) after which the wine is named, this white ages like few others can. Gaining stunning complexity in the years after bottling, the magnificent Silex is more than capable of improving with age for 20 years or so while at the same time being totally irresistible when young.

"Tightly wound, with a lot in reserve, this has a piercing minerality that leads the way for floral, lemon verbena, lime, salted butter and thyme notes. Very long on the finish and very precise." –Wine Spectator

$119.99 Vintage 2005;   96 pts, Wine Spectator

Vega Sicilia Unico Ribera del Duero 1987

The renowned Unico (produced from 80-100 year old vines) is one of the world's most distinctive, singular wines. Always released late (usually after at least 10 years in the cellars), it is incredibly fresh, and capable of 2-3 more decades of evolution.

“...opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by a glorious perfume of sweet cherries, flowers, licorice, and toasty oak. Full-bodied, with tremendous brightness and texture as well as an elegant, long, head-turning finish, it is undoubtedly super juice...”  Robert Parker

“Medium ruby. Sappy raspberry, game and spices on the nose. . A wine of great verve and sweetness; lush and chewy but also urgent and sharply delineated. Bracing acids give this dense wine buns of steel. Wonderful expanding finish features strong but thoroughly ripe tannins. An outstanding vintage for this legendary wine.” –Stephen Tanzer

$1199.99 Vintage 1987 1.5L;   94 pts Stephen Tanzer,  92, pts Robert Parker

Justin Isosceles Paso Robles 2006

Justin Isosceles has been one of the closest things to a can't-miss domestic Bordeaux blend over the last decade. Add the fact that it so much less expensive than most of its Napa brethren and you have a great bargain on your hands.

“... inky purple with a slight red hue around the rim. Aromas of blackberry, black plum, leather, mocha, and cassis combine with light layers of caramel, vanilla and a touch of smoke resulting from the extended oak ageing. The entry is filled with red and black fruit. A balance of softness and acidity segues into a mid palate with length and weight. Seamless, integrated tannins marry with ripe fruit, and flavors of red currant, butterscotch and hint of pencil lead on the finish of this wine.” –Anthony Dias Blue

$63.99 Vintage 2006;   94 pts, Anthony Dias Blue

Louis M Martini Lot No 1 Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

The 1st Martini small lot wines were made by Louis P. Martini back in 1968. Lot  No.1 is structurally dense and complex and was crafted with the intent of capturing the essence of Napa Valley's diverse terroir. These wines are a tribute to the Louis Martini heritage, a window into the future, and representative of the Martini Family’s unwavering commitment to producing the very best Cabernet Sauvignons.

“...dense ruby/purple, with beautiful, sweet crème de cassis, licorice and toasty oak characterisitics.  The wine has wonderful body and loads of ripeness, depth and structure... drink it over the following 20-25 years.” –Robert Parker

$84.99 Vintage 2003;   91 pts, Robert Parker

Charles Smith Wines Royal City Syrah 2006 Stoneridge Vineyard

Owner-winemaker Charles Smith with his big hair, kick ass attitude and bold packaging arrived in the Walla Walla Valley following eleven years in Scandinavia managing rock bands. Originally hailing from northern California, he has been involved with wine personally and professionally his entire life.

A glass-coating opaque purple color, it gives off a brooding bouquet of liquid minerals, lavender, incense, game, and bacon. This is followed by an opulent, plush, savory, dense wine with no hard edges. Impeccably balanced, it can be enjoyed now, but additional nuance is sure to emerge with patient cellaring. Wines like this have no track record of longevity, but we’d roll the dice on this one.

$104.99 Vintage 2006;  98 pts, Robert Parker

Krupp Brothers The Doctor 2005 / 750 ml.

Krupp Brothers Winery “the Doctor”

“Deep Garnet in color with a purple rim. Exotic aromas of Satsuma plums, spice, orange rind, cassis, black raspberries and Logan berries harmonizing with anise, cloves and vanilla. The palate is fresh and lively with focused intensity. Flavors of jasmine, lavender, black cherries and pomegranate contribute to a deliciously bright mid-palate with cedary oak leading to a long savory finish. Enjoy now through 2014.”

$89.99 Vintage 2005;  89 pts, Stephen Tanzer, 88 pts, Wine Spectator

“the Advocate”

“... blends petit verdot (57%), merlot (25%) and malbec (18%) from Oakville's Stagecoach Vineyard. Deep purple/magenta hues; Bright, fruit driven aromas of cranberry, raspberry, dark cherry and plum are intermingled with tobacco, spice and rhubarb yielding an inviting and complex nose. The palate is beautifully focused and polished. Raspberries, violets, lavender and cranberries give way to fine dusty tannins that frame the mouth perfectly. Enjoy now through 2015.”

$79.99  Vintage 2005

2004 Clarendon Hills Grenache Old Vines Kangarilla Vineyard

From another ancient vineyard composed of sandy soils overlaying clay, the 2004 Grenache Kangarilla is a big, up-front, exotic, fruit-dominated effort displaying loads of mountain berries, blackberries, white pepper, herbs, and spice. While not the most complex of these Grenaches, it is a lush, fleshy, beautifully-textured example to enjoy over the next 8-10 years.

$61.99 Vintage 2004;   92 pts, Robert Parker

Pio Cesare Barolo 2004

Pio Cesare has been producing wines for more than 100 years. The tradition began in 1881, when Pio Cesare started gathering grapes in his vineyards and purchasing those of some selected and reliable farmers in the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco districts. Today, the estate is managed by Pio Boffa, great-grandson of Pio Cesare. Under his stewardship, the wines of Pio Cesare have become famous throughout the world.

“Extremely attractive aromas of blackberry, fresh mushroom and mahogany. Full-bodied, with lovely fruit, soft tannins and a long finish. Chewy, yet balanced and pretty.” –Wine Spectator

“Medium-deep red. Complex aromas of raspberry, musky tobacco and minerals; distinctly higher-pitched and more backward than the 2003 normale Then wonderfully rich and delineated, with underlying minerality accentuating the impression of primary fruit. Finishes quite long, with broad, full, thoroughly ripe tannins and terrific structure and grip. Offers impressive potential.” –Stephen Tanzer

Redheads Studio Return of the Living Red

"A unique blend of 70% 2007 McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% 2004 Touriga Nacional from Langhorne Creek put together by Justin Lane and Adam Hooper, this purple-colored blockbuster offers up a super-fragrant bouquet of violets, lavender, baking spices, leather, black currant, and blackberry. Opulent and complex on the palate, this beautifully integrated, harmonious wine has exceptional length and a stratospheric pleasure quotient. Enjoy it over the next 10-12 years.

Fifteen winemakers are associated with Redheads Studio, located in a converted curry restaurant east of McLaren Vale. The names and labels suggest that other things beside wine are also consumed at Redheads Studio but a taste of the product indicates that this operation is as serious as a heart attack." Jay Miller

Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2005

By the same producers of the famed "Sassicaia", the grapes are grown in a vineyard on lands adjacent to the Sassicaia vineyard.

The 2005 vintage was fermented in steel vats at controlled temperatures with a maceration period of 15 days for the the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon and 12 days for the Sangiovese. The wine was then aged in French and American oak barriques for 14 months, one-third of the barriques being new ones.

"Wonderful aromas of crushed blackberry and cherry follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long finish.  Needs time to develop in the bottle, but hard not to drink now.  Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.  Best after 2009." -Wine Spectator

“Dense purple and red in colour. Nose is quite closed but is elegant and exhibits some fruity plum and mineral characters. Intense fruit on the palate with plenty of plum, prunes, spice and some earthy mineral characters along with some caramel-like oak. Fruit carries the 14% alcohol very well indeed to the extent it is not noticible. Tannins are quite prominent and provide good grip on a powdery chalk-like finish. This is a serious wine with good structure that needs some cellaring time in order to settle down and mature. Superb now but will be even better over a couple of years.”

$53.99 Vintage 2004;  90 pts, Wine Spectator

Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Antico 2003

Poggio Antico's Brunello di Montalcino is typically deep and intense ruby red in color. The bouquet is well developed and persistent, and increases in intensity with further bottle aging. It has a very clean nose, with hints of blackberry and licorice.

In the mouth it is rounded and concentrated, with great vitality, yet elegant and harmonious, thanks to the particularly sweet tannins. It has a very long finish and ages gracefully under proper conditions.

“Beautiful and perfumed - Full-bodied and long, with chewy tannins.” Wine Spectator

$249.99 Vintage 2004, 1.5 L;  91 pts, Wine Spectator

2004 Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select

Robert Parker, tasting notes:

One of the world’s, as well as Napa’s, most profound Cabernet Sauvignons is the 2,000 or so case production of Shafer’s Hillside Select. Made from their finest parcels in Stags Leap, the wine spends nearly 32 months in 100% new oak. This is a wine that usually has 20-30 years of aging potential. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is showing even better than it did last year. A much sexier, opulent, flamboyant style of wine with notes of black currant liqueur intermixed with toasty new oak, charcoal, smoke, barbecue spices, and oodles of fruit, this wine has fabulous richness in an exuberant, sexy style, and a long, heady layered finish with nothing out of balance. The integration of acidity, tannin, wood, and alcohol are brilliant. This is a great wine to drink over the next two decades, if not longer.

$206.99 Vintage 2004;  97 pts, Robert Parker

Madrigal Sonnet #63 2004

Vintage 2004 Sonnet #63 showcases the depth and eloquence of Napa Valley’s most exceptional fruit in a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Like the lyrical poem that lends its name, this wine is a tribute to the passion that inspires us.  A concentrated perfume of berry jam and violets, wrapped in a trace ofsmokiness, greets the nose. A velvety richness fills the palate, with a medley of deep plum, blackberry and warm spice. The closing notes of sweetly toasted oak and sandalwood are infused with juicy cherry, leaving a lasting impression of finesse and structure.  Only 400 cases produced.

$39.99 pts Vintage 2004
